Translations flatten complexity

Manto's Urdu is sharp, colloquial, deliberately provocative. English translations smooth the edges. You're studying a photocopy of a painting.

Political language carries ideology

I can read basic Urdu already. Is this for me?

Exactly. This advanced specialization takes you from basic decoding to fluent academic reading, primary-source analysis, and real fieldwork interviews.

Do I need the foundation course first?

This is an advanced B2 to C1 specialization, so it assumes A1 to B1 basics. If you've studied some Urdu or Hindi script, you may already have them. If not, choose the bundle below, which includes the full A1 to B1 foundation.

I already know Hindi. Do I need this?

Spoken Urdu and Hindi are largely mutually intelligible, but the scripts are completely different. If you can't read Nastaliq fluently, you can't access Urdu texts at a research level.

Can I use this for grant applications?

Many grants for South Asian research value language competency. Demonstrating advanced Urdu proficiency strengthens your application.

What's the difference between the two options?
